TKAM-Scout's Journal#15

The trial of Tom Robinson's case began to come to a head. There were many people going to the church during weekend, even Mr.Underwood who never went there before. Last night, my father left home with an electrical lightbulb. My brother and I asked if we could go with him together, but he refused. I felt very disappointed. However, my brother suggested to go out and find our father. Then, we went to our father's office. However, we didn't see him at the office. Finally, we saw him sitting outside the county jail. He was reading his book with the lightbulb. Later, a group of men came to the jail and spoke to my father. I ran to them, and I saw Mr.Cunningham there. I tried to speak friendly to him, so they wouldn't hurt my father. I told Mr.Cunningham that I had invited his son to our home for lunch. He smiled to me and promised me not to hurt my father. Then, Mr.Cunningham and his friends left.

Last night, I felt something moving under my bed. I found out that Dill hid under the bed. Dill told me that his parents seemed not interested in him. His parents locked him in the basement. Therefore he stole some money and escaped from the family. After my brother listened to his story, he suggested Dill to give a phone call to his parents. This morning, my father knew that Dill was staying in our home. He didn't say anything and just phoned Dill's parents to ask them to let Dill to stay with us.

My father told me a bad news. He said that aunt Alexandra decided to stay at my house for a while. Aunt Alexandra arrived today, and started to introduce herself in the neighborhood. When she saw me, she was angry and said girls had to wear dresses. I really didn't like anyone who forced me to do something. In the afternoon, she wanted my brother and me to know the history of our family, and how famous our grandparents were. My father had never told us any of these stories before. He only told me that my cousin, Josh went insane at university. I don't like aunt Alexandra to stay with us and I hope that she will leave soon.

TKAM-Scout's Journal#12

My father had to go to an important meeting this week. Therefore, Calpurnia took me and my brother to the church where were all blacks. I found out that they did everything just same as white people’s churches. In the church, a black woman named Lula tried to tell Calpurnia that we were white people. We shouldn’t be in that place. However, Calpurnia told Lula that my father was very nice to black people. Lula finally allowed us to stay in the church. I found out something very interesting in Calpurnia. In the church, Calpurnia spoke English with accent, but she could speak proper English at home.

I was very surprised today. I used to think that my father couldn’t do any physical works such as playing football. However, my father’s action had shocked me today. A dog appeared in our neighborhood and we were very scared. Therefore, we told Calpurnia, and she phoned my father immediately. After a while, my father came back with a sheriff. The sheriff gave my father a gun. The dog walking closer to Radley’s house. My father shot the dog immediately. My brother and I were so surprised by the action of our father. We never knew our father could use a gun. He was so brave. Later, Miss Maudie told us that our father used to be the best shooter in the town.

Today was my first day in grade two. However, I found out that school was very boring. On the way home, my brother told me that he got his pants back. He found out his pants which were folded and sewed up. After the sharing of my brother, I finally believed that Boo was still living. He was a good person, not like what the rumor was saying.

It was the last day for Dill to stay at Maycomb. My brother and I gained the permission to stay with Dill in the evening. We could have some more sharing with one another. However, Dill and my brother suggested to peek into Boo’s window. I felt it was dangerous for them to do that. However, they still wanted to see what was inside of Boo’s house. My brother and I hoisted Dill up and allowed Dill to peek at the window. Dill said that he didn’t see anything, but only curtains. Later, we went to the back of the house and wanted to peek at the back window. Suddenly, a shadow of a man appeared, and we all were scared. Therefore, we ran quickly back home. However, my brother lost his pants in the gate. When we arrived home, my father asked what had happened on my brother and why he had lost his pants. I thought my father might have already known what we had done this evening.

Today, Dill and my brother decided to deliver a note to Boo. We wanted Boo to come out and sit with us for a while. My brother used a fishing line to deliver a note to Boo. Unluckily, we were caught by my father. He was very angry and lectured us not doing that again. He reminded us that Boo had his own privacy, and we shouldn’t go near to his house unless he invited us. I thought my father was right, and I had promised him not doing that again.

I noticed that my brother and Dill seemed not really happy to play with me. Therefore, I sat with Miss Maudie who was my neighbor all day. We watched the sun set together sitting on the front steps of her house. I also made a cake with her. I thought we could become good friends because Miss Maudie was honest  and has a good skill of speaking. I asked her if Boo was still alive, and she told me that he was still alive but didn’t like to come out of his house. She also shared that the rumors about him were not true. Boo was a foot-washing Baptist and he believed all pleasures were sins against God. It was why he liked to stay inside of his house to read the Bible.

Summer vacation finally started and Dill arrived at Maycomb today. My brother and I were very happy to see him, and Dill suggested a game. He wanted me to get into an old tire, and then pushed the tire. The tire finally crashed into Boo’s yard. I was very scared if Boo came out. Therefore, we quickly ran back home. In the evening, we played another new game about Boo. My brother acted as Boo, Dill acted as Boo’s father, and I acted as Boo’s mother. Unfortunately, my father found out what we were playing and stopped us.

The school year is almost over. I’m very happy because Dill will come and play with us this summer. My brother and I found two polished Indian-head pennies in the knot-hole of an oak tree beside Boo’s house. We also found two good luck tokens last week too. We both didn't know who had put those things in, and we wondered if they were gifts to us or not. However, we decided to take them.

I was very lucky today when I was on the way home after school. I found two gums in a knot-hole of an oak tree beside Boo’s house. I was so excited to find those gums and decided to eat them. However, my brother told me not to chew the gums which were not clean. They might have been put in poison.

TKAM-Scout's Journal#3

Today was the first day of school, but I was not really happy. In the morning, my father told me to wear a dress to school; in fact, I didn't like to wear a dress. My teacher was Ms. Caroline. I didn't like her, because she told me whatever my father taught me was wrong. In addition, she told me that my father shouldn’t teach me anymore, and the way of my reading was not correct. I felt angry at Ms. Caroline. At lunch time, Ms. Caroline asked those students who didn’t go home for lunch if they could show her what they had for lunch. Walter Cunningham refused to show his lunch to Miss Caroline because he didn’t have lunch at all. Therefore, Miss Caroline wanted to borrow some money for him to buy his lunch. Since Walter understood that he couldn’t pay the money back, he refused to take the money. Miss Caroline was so surprised and felt very wired. I tried my best to explain to her, However, Miss Caroline was so impatient and couldn’t understand the culture of Cunningham. My brother and I invited Walter to our home for lunch. It was not a lucky day to me.

The summer holiday is going to be over, and Dill has returned to his family in Meridian. I am going to the first grade of school tomorrow, and I’m very excited now and looking forward to seeing what I will be able to learn in school. My father told me that I would go to Maycomb County School, and it was the same school with my brother. I hope my new school life will be full of joy.

TKAM-Scout's Journal #1

I met a new friend in the morning. His name was Dill. He was a small guy but he was older than me. He was from Meridian, Mississippi, and he would spend the summer at Miss Rachel Haverford’s house. My brother and I told him about the story of Boo, and he seemed to be really interested about it. At night, we went near to Boo’s house together and saw a shadow moving around inside of the house. I didn’t know if I saw a ghost or not.
